DC Wants You!
The twenty-sixth installment of my “Nerding Out With Nick Dean” column ran in this past Sunday’s edition of The Post-Journal:

Eh, What?
_____ Reborn:

From the press release: Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness reunite this December for an action packed story of epic proportions. Want to know what it is? Find out in two weeks at the Cup O’ Joe Panel (Saturday, July 23rd at 2:45PM PST) during Comic Con International in San Diego!
Daniel Johnston has launched a Kickstarter project aimed at financing an interactive comic that will debut in both a classic, printed version, as well as an online version that combines his artwork with downloadable music, additional storylines, and the chance for fans to add their own contributions to provide an “infinite” experience.
It’s already met its initial $10,000 goal, but those wishing to donate more can choose from pricing levels that give them rewards like autographed editions, T-shirts, and even recognition as an “Editor” in the finished book, which also gets you on the guest-list at a future show and an invitation to meet Johnston backstage.

Death By Comics Robbery
Saw this on Comic Book Resources last week, but just got around to reading the full story.
In short, a 77-year-old man was looking to sell his comic collection and started inquiring around the city of Rochester.
A local business owner then allegedly had his thugs bust into the guy’s home and steal the comic books.
The dudes roughed him up and he died of a heart attack hours later.
Sad story. But somehow… As I read the details, as published by The AP… It just kept getting funnier and funnier.
Here’s a few of the highlights.
- The business owner’s name is Rico Vendetti, which sounds like a terribly stereotypical mafioso comic book character.
- The case broke Thursday night when a woman charged with prostitution in Rochester gave investigators information that led to the arrest, Orleans County District Attorney Joseph Cardone said. A prostitute! How random!
- Police charged Vendetti, 41, and Juan Javier, 17, with burglary. So not only does the story have one comically-named bad guy, but two! Juan Javier sounds like something Stan Lee would’ve come up with decades ago.
- The comic books haven’t been recovered, and the exact connection to the woman charged with prostitution wasn’t clear. Again… A prostitute. How random.
The Associated Press has the whole story HERE.
Very sad that the dude died, but the rest of it’s just so weird and random. Vendetti owns two Rochester businesses — Papa Van’s Restaurant and Al’s Green Tavern. Definitely won’t frequenting either of ‘em any time soon.
